K2 Base Camp

An epic trekking destination at the foot of the world's second-highest mountain.

About K2 Base Camp

K2 Base Camp is one of the most challenging and rewarding trekking destinations in the world, situated at the foot of K2, the second-highest mountain on Earth at 8,611 meters (28,251 feet). The trek to K2 Base Camp takes you through some of the most spectacular mountain scenery on the planet, including glaciers, high-altitude deserts, and towering peaks. The base camp itself sits on the Godwin-Austen Glacier at an elevation of approximately 5,150 meters (16,900 feet), offering unparalleled views of K2 and surrounding peaks like Broad Peak and the Gasherbrums.

Historical Background

K2 was first surveyed by a European team in 1856 during the Great Trigonometrical Survey of British India. The mountain was given the notation 'K2' as it was the second peak measured in the Karakoram range. The first serious attempt to climb K2 was undertaken in 1902, but the summit wasn't reached until 1954 when an Italian expedition led by Ardito Desio successfully made it to the top. Since then, K2 has gained a reputation as one of the most difficult and dangerous mountains to climb, with a much higher fatality rate than Mount Everest, earning it the nickname 'The Savage Mountain.'
