Atabad Lake
A stunning turquoise lake born from natural disaster, now a tourist paradise.
About Atabad Lake
Attabad Lake is a spectacular turquoise-blue lake in the Hunza Valley of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. What makes this lake unique is its origin - it was formed in January 2010 as a result of a massive landslide that blocked the flow of the Hunza River, creating a natural dam. The lake stretches over 21 kilometers in length and reaches depths of up to 100 meters. Its striking blue waters against the backdrop of towering mountains create a mesmerizing landscape that attracts visitors from around the world.
Historical Background
On January 4, 2010, a massive landslide occurred in Attabad village, blocking the flow of the Hunza River and submerging several villages upstream. The disaster displaced thousands of people and cut off the Karakoram Highway, disrupting the vital trade route between Pakistan and China. What began as a catastrophe has transformed over time into a beautiful tourist attraction. In 2015, the Pakistani government completed the Karakoram Highway realignment project, constructing tunnels through the mountains to restore the road connection.
